The “Closed Farm”

Sattler Hof is a traditional “closed farm”, which means it cannot be divided. The farm must be passed on as an indivisible unit, including all agricultural land and buildings.
This regulation has a long history. Already in 1526, the Tyrolean law prohibited the division of farms to preserve family-run agricultural businesses and secure their future. For this reason, the entire farm was often handed over to the next successor while the owner was still alive.
In the past, many siblings remained on the family farm, working as farmhands, while young men often established themselves as craftsmen, such as blacksmiths, cobblers, carpenters, or tailors. Many women married, moved to the city, or entered a convent.
Today, of around 19,000 agricultural businesses in South Tyrol, more than 11,000 are still closed farms, showing how alive this tradition remains. It prevents farms from being divided and continues to provide families with a stable economic foundation.
Sattler Hof has been run by the current farmer Sepp since 1993.
